Builders’ Technology Use/Offerings Study - May 2006

This survey was designed to identify the specific characteristics of the technology products being incorporated into today’s new homes and as part of remodeling/retrofit projects, as well as to learn more about the decision-making process followed by builders for identifying and specifying products and for soliciting the counsel and services of residential integration professionals. The core information obtained was focused on the evolution and penetration of new technologies into homes as buyer-selected options or as standard parts of the builder package.

Research Study Objectives

  • To develop a comprehensive profile of homebuilders’ activity and decision-making as it relates to the full spectrum of home technology and custom electronics products being introduced into the construction of new single-family homes and new multi-dwelling units in apartment buildings and condominium projects.
  • To determine the frequency with which specific home technology products/systems are offered by builders as a standard part of the new home.
  • To determine the frequency with which specific home technology products/systems are made available to prospective homebuyers as an option, at additional cost to the standard builder package.
  • To determine the share of new homes sold in which specific home technology products/systems are actually installed by homebuilders, either directly or through the services of a partner/subcontractor.
  • To determine what specific brands of selected home technology products/systems are installed most frequently by builders in the homes that they sell.
  • To develop a subjective evaluation of what—if any—difference the availability of specific home technology products/services make in the average time that it takes for a builder to sell a new home.
  • To solicit a subjective evaluation of the profit margin realized by builders for home technology amenities compared to other popular amenity options offered to prospective homebuyers.
  • To develop regional, size of business, and market segment perspectives on the basic information collected in this survey by also soliciting information from companies regarding their State of primary operation, their dollar volume of work, the number of housing units they build, and the average selling price of the homes that they build and market.
